In the North Sea off Scotland’s east coast lays the Bell Rock. A perilous reef only visible at low tide, and the site of the eponymous 14th century bell, which rung out in warning to approaching ships.

The rock is now home to the Bell Rock Lighthouse – a feat of engineering recognised as one of the seven wonders of the industrial world.

Designs for a lighthouse on the site were first commissioned in 1799. However, plans submitted by the chosen engineer – 27-year-old Robert Stevenson, were soon shelved due to concerns about his “radical” methods, and relative youth. Further catastrophes ensued at the rock and following a furor in parliament in 1806, Stevenson finally gained approval to commence the build.

The unique construction, using meticulously hewn granite and sandstone blocks, was further complicated by the site itself – exposed to treacherous storms and immersed in water for up to 20 hours per day. Stevenson’s determined crew, compiled of carpenters, stonemasons, blacksmiths, and a workhorse named Bassey, completed the project in 1810.

The Bell Rock Lighthouse stands proudly in the same site to this day. It is the world’s oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse. A true example of risk turned into reward and the original source of inspiration for a firm devised by an innovator in the world of insurance – Bellrock founder Stephen McCarthy. Stephen’s vision has been further expanded by Bellrock CEO Marc Chiarella into a national presence, setting a new benchmark in advisory and advocacy services.
